Ok, so, I've recently been following the popular BBC series Merlin.

It's like...a high school fic for Arthurian Legend, except still in a fantasy setting and without the school thing. And, even though they TRY to pair Arthur with every single female character ever, somehow the gigantically slashy atmosphere between him and Merlin just won't go away.

For example, there's an entire episode where Merlin drinks poison to save Arthur's life, followed by Arthur disobeying his father and going on an epic quest of doomy darkness to a really far away place to find a really rare flower (whilst battling an evil sorceress) in order to save Merlin. In the meanwhile, Merlin lies unconscious and calls out Arthur's name. And then some sort of weird connection happens and Merlin somehow sends Arthur a guiding light. Er. Yeah.

Or, the episode where Arthur and Merlin are given two cups, one of which supposedly is poisonous, and Arthur is told he has to drink one, and Merlin will have to drink the other. So...Arthur's first thought is to drink both and save Merlin.

Or, the first season's finale, wherein Arthur is about to die, and Merlin goes to exchange his life for Arthur's.

And, of course, the end of "Beauty and Beast" a couple weeks ago, which scribblemoosementioned in her blog. You know, the one where Arthur and Merlin have a not-hug-awkward-moment.


So, anyway, the whole reason for this blog isn't that. I'm actually not really a big fan of Arthur/Merlin slash usually, it's just that it's so BLINDING.

The reason is, I wanted to share one of the newest episode summaries for an episode coming out in a few weeks. It's untitled, as of yet, and this is the official summary:

"Dignitaries from rival kingdoms descend on Camelot for peace talks, but what King Alined really wants is war. He'll do everything in his power to stir up hostilities, even if it means using magic. Alined's jester, Trickler, puts a spell on Arthur to make him fall madly in love with rival King Olaf's beloved daughter, Vivian. Chaos reigns in the palace and Camelot is once more poised on the brink of war. Can Merlin free Arthur's heart before the prince loses his head in battle?"

Am I the only one who thinks that last line is really really REALLY un-straight?

So...I'm totally self-pimping shamelessly.


It's an original story I wrote, and it's shounen-ai-ish. If you don't like that (and I'm fairly sure there are none of THOSE people on my LJ list) you can pretend the narrator is a girl. I figured since most of the people I talk to about shounen-ai things are on LJ, I'd at least give a shout out.

I have a set of Weiss chibis and Schwarz chibis that I doodled a long long time ago, that I decided to upload to dA.  They're not very good, I know, and the heads are kind of off-center, but maybe some of you will be entertained?

So, in one of my Arabic drills today, we're doing dictation of Arabic names.  The second set of four names are supposed to be male.  The second male name comes up.  I click on the button.  I hear the woman's voice read: Rashiiiid.  

I squee a little bit like the Gundam Wing fangirl I am and feel kind of close to Quatre.  

Ok, I just wanted to rant briefly about deathfics. 

Honestly, I don't write them myself.  I rarely use death even in original fiction.  Part of it is that it's hard for me to kill of my own characters, and I dislike screwing with canon for fanfics, but part of it is just that I feel like death is often a cheap way to get angst.  

However, I won't say I refuse to read them, because they CAN work, but I often avoid them because it's very difficult to get right.  And my honest belief is that the best writer is able to evoke emotions even without using death.  If death FITS with the story, I find it acceptable.  It's just that it seems like people write death fics just to be emo a lot of the time, and sometimes it just seems forced and/or illogical. 

I think the fandom whose fics I've read most is "weiss kreuz", so I'll just use that as an example.  I am not ok with suicide fics pretty much ever in that fandom, because it DOESN'T MAKE SENSE, almost EVER.  Most of the other deathfics I've read always sound to me like the author is trying too hard to write something incredibly dramatic and emo, that will make people cry and say "oh what an amazing sad fic", but comes off as abrupt, and generally feels really out of character. 

And I personally WRITE for the Weiss fandom.  I feel fairly satisfied by my own work, and a lot of it IS angst, and IS meant to be emotionally evocative, but I try to write it in a subtly painful fashion, because I feel like it suits the fandom much more.  

Anyway.  My point is, if you want to use death, that's your prerogative as an author.  However, use it carefully and with skill, or it'll just seem like you're trying too hard to get angst.
